Good question. In Japan, if you are a novice driver, you have to stick one of these on your car so people know to be careful around you. It has, however, caught on here in the States as the official JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) emblem, which is actually kindof funny, considering its original purpose. So people who put Japanese market-sourced parts on their cars and switch their Civics to right hand drive and such plaster their cars with the "JDM emblem."
